Preface

Mathematics
has long been considered as
the “queen and servant of science”. With
the fast pace of advancement of modern science and technology,
mathematics
plays an indispensable role. The progress of frontier subjects, such as
nanotechnology, quantum computer and genome sequence analysis, can only
take
place with the help of mathematical principles and techniques.
Therefore, it is
natural for a university like Multimedia
University
which is at the forefront of
engineering science and advanced technology to set up a research centre
that
deals with the mathematical sciences.
 |

Introduction

The Centre
for
Mathematical Sciences acts as an umbrella under which mathematicians,
physicists and engineers can meet, discuss and formulate problems of
common
interest, and cooperate in their research. The centre supports research
in pure
and applied mathematics, statistics and computer science. It also
encourages
research in areas that utilize mathematics, such as telecommunication
and
information systems.
 |

Objective

To
bring mathematicians, physicists and engineers in Multimedia University
together to focus on research on the application of mathematics to pure
and
applied sciences.
 |

Mission

To be the centre
of excellence for mathematical sciences by developing new mathematical
techniques for frontiers topics, such as DNA sequence analysis,
Internet
traffic analysis and modelling, transport phenomena in complex media,
nanotechnology, medical image and signal analysis, high energy physics,
cosmology, etc.
